Greenwich Music Festival

The Human Voice & The Lady and the Unicorn

The Human Voice

A woman sits alone in her apartment, the day after a break-up. The phone rings. It’s him.

Poulenc’s La voix humaine (The Human Voice) takes Cocteau’s seminal monologue as its libretto. GMF’s Ted Huffman directs mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin in the role of Elle with pianist Djordje Nesic (GMF 2009). Greenwich audiences will remember Ms. Rubin from her stunning performances as Penelope in 2008’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria (Watch Video), for which David Shengold of Opera News declared, “The extraordinary mezzo Laurie Rubin provided the emotional core as a touchingly vulnerable Penelope, lavishing plangent, flowing tone and chiseled, expressive phrasing on her music.”

The Lady and the Unicorn

Choreographer Zack Winokur (GMF Artist 2009, 2010) returns to the festival to create a new dance based on La Dame a la Licorne (The Lady and the Unicorn), a choreographic scenario that Cocteau wrote for the Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo in 1953.
